Now for the Best bit
New plaster finishes can usually be painted after approximately 3 to 7 days. Before painting it`s best to seal the new Plaster! Most professional decorators use a watered down coat of emulsion for this, it`s known as a mist coat. This mist coat is made up using approximately 3 to 4 parts of water to 1 part of emulsion. This coat will prime the surface and allow your final neat coats of emulsion to cover much more evenly. It will also stop too much paint build up as new plaster is very porous. Be sure to mix this base coat thoroughly and avoid any runs. Allow approximately 1 hour before you start to apply the neat emulsion. you will achieve best results by applying 2 coats of emulsion the first coat should be allowed to dry for approximately 2-3 hours before a second coat is applied. Ceilings always look better painted in mat as this hides any slight undulations highlighted buy lighting.
If you prefer wallpaper, Seal the new plaster with diluted pva or a similar sealer, do this the day before. You can purchase suitable sealers from B&Q, Wickes etc.
